Ljubljana, July 2023
Statehood Day of Montenegro was celebrated in the capital of Slovenia, at National Heroes Square, next to the building of the Slovenian parliament, where the wreaths were laid at the memorial to the fallen national heroes of the People’s Liberation Movement, among them the Montenegrin national hero Milovan Saranovic.
After the Slovenian Army’s honorary guard performed the Slovenian and Montenegrin national anthems, the wreaths were laid by the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Ana Zekovic on behalf of the Embassy of Montenegro and Honorary Consul of Montenegro in the Republic of Slovenia Vojislav Kovac.
The event was attended by representatives and members of the Montenegrin associations in Slovenia, as well as representatives of the Association of fighters for the values of the Slovenian People’s Liberation Movement.
On the memorial in the center of Ljubljana, the name of the national hero from Montenegro, Milovan Saranovic, was inscribed, among others. He was born in 1913 in Potkraj, near Danilovgrad, and he was an initiator and participant of numerous rebel and liberation battles on the territory of Montenegro, and beyond. He died as a commander of partisan units on July 31, 1943, at the territory of Slovenia. It is an event that represents a symbolic reminder of the values of the anti-fascist struggle, and it is traditionally organized on the Statehood Day of Montenegro and the Day of the uprising of the Montenegrin people.
